New Commissioner of the World Axe Throwing League – 2024

November 7th, 2023

As many already know, Mike Morton’s term as Commissioner comes to a close this December.  We have been fortunate to have his passion and leadership at the helm of both the community and the sport as a whole for the past two years. While Mike leaves some giant shoes to fill, we are confident that our next Commissioner will be able to fill them.  We are thrilled to announce the next Commissioner for the World Axe Throwing League will be a long-time community member, venue owner, and council representative: Sarah Sed.

“I have known Sarah for a number of years, and she brings a lot of experience and great ideas for growing the sport to the position. I can’t wait to see what she does for WATL and the sport of axe throwing!”

-Mike Morton

Commissioner of The World Axe Throwing League

Sarah is no stranger to the world of organized sports, spending much of her youth playing softball and volleyball, eventually moving on to curl for the Ohio State Club team as well. While she would say she is much better at these sports than she is at axe throwing, her love of this sport stems from the passion demonstrated by each and every member of the community, a common sentiment shared by newcomers and veterans alike.

Sarah brings a wealth of experience to the table as a small business owner, manager, and as a member of the community itself. She currently owns one of the longest-standing venues, has served on the WATL advisory council for 4 years, and has been to every single WATC and US Open.  Many of these have operated smoothly with her taking a leadership role among the many volunteers.

“The Commissioner role in the World Axe Throwing League is in an extraordinary position of strength. Sarah’s capabilities to navigate the complexities of changing environments, history as a collaborative leader, and passion for the axe throwing community made her the right leader, at the right time, for WATL. I’ve known Sarah for many years and I could not think of a better person to lead the organization.”

-Mario Zelaya

President of The World Axe Throwing League

Sarah hopes to expand on the many successes WATL has had in the last few years. She has been excited to see increased visibility for the sport as the organization has stepped up in its community outreach and availability of resources. She hopes to extend that reach to new and existing venues which support the sport as a whole while navigating the best paths forward for both the organization and the sport.

Sarah’s organizational skills, ability to adapt to changing circumstances, and her personal experience as a venue owner gives her the unique abilities to make those goals a reality. Through the ever-changing climate of a burgeoning sport, we cannot think of a better candidate for the role.  We are confident that the next several years will continue to see the same growth and success under Sarah’s leadership.

“I am honored and excited to be stepping into the role of WATL Commissioner.  With the help of the WATL staff and the support of this passionate community, I know that we can accomplish a great deal together.”
