Everything You Need to Know for Your First Axe Throwing Tournament
Are you gearing up for your first axe-throwing tournament? Whether you’re a seasoned thrower or new to the competitive scene, preparing for the big day can feel overwhelming. This guide has everything you need to know before and during your tournament to help you feel confident and ready to hit the target.
Travel Tips
Flying: If you’re flying to the tournament, it’s essential to pack your axes correctly. Cushion them well in your checked luggage to prevent damage and consider using a hard case with foam inserts if you’re traveling with multiple axes. Be prepared for a TSA inspection—axes often attract attention, but as long as they’re secured, you’ll have no issues. We recommend leaving a note for TSA in your bag explaining that you’re attending an axe throwing tournament.
Driving: Traveling by car is simpler—just secure your axes safely and bring them along. If you’re traveling with friends or teammates, carpooling can make the journey more enjoyable and more affordable. Feel free to post in the tournament group that you’re looking for somebody to carpool with and you might just make a new friend. When traveling by car always keep your valuables with you or in a secure location; never leave them unattended in your car, even if it’s locked. Having something stolen from you can put a real damper on the trip.
Where to Stay
For major tournaments, especially those hosted by WATL, check if there’s a hotel block reserved at a preferred hotel. Staying at the recommended hotel often provides discounted rates and supports the hosting venue, leading to better events in the future. All of this information will be made readily available to you via the tournament player portal, so be sure to take a look and read all of the info there!
If staying in a hotel isn’t your preference, consider alternative lodging options. Many players choose to book an Airbnb, which can be a cost-effective choice if traveling with a group. Splitting the cost of a house or apartment can significantly reduce expenses while offering a more communal experience, perfect for socializing with teammates or fellow competitors.
Another option is staying with friends or family if they live near the tournament venue. This can be a great way to save money while enjoying the comfort of a familiar environment. Plus, it’s a chance to catch up with loved ones while participating in the tournament.
No matter where you choose to stay, planning ahead is key. Accommodation options near major events can fill up quickly, so securing your lodging early ensures you’ll be rested and ready for the competition.
Stay Updated with the Event Page
Most tournaments will have a dedicated event page or player portal, often hosted on Facebook. This page contains invaluable information and updates that you’ll want to keep tabs on. Bookmark it on your phone for easy access to schedules, venue details, and announcements. Staying informed is key to a smooth tournament experience.

Tournament Day: What to Expect
Before the Tournament:
- Confirm your registration, location, and schedule ahead of time.
- Check for any last-minute updates or changes to parking or check-in details.
- Arrive early to participate in meet-and-greet sessions and equipment checks.
During the Tournament:
- Equipment checks are mandatory to ensure your axes meet competition standards, so schedule time for this.
- Warm-up opportunities vary by event. Many large tournaments provide 10 practice throws before your first match but no open warm-ups on tournament day. Smaller tournaments may offer open practice periods—be courteous and share the lane with other throwers.
- Use downtime between matches to strategize, relax, or watch other competitors.
Understanding the Brackets:
WATL tournaments use a double-elimination format, where each match is best-of-three. You’ll play a minimum of four matches before elimination, so plan for plenty of throwing and some waiting between matches. Keep track of the brackets to know when it’s your turn to compete.
Ask Questions:
Judges and staff are there to help. If you’re ever unsure about scoring, match rules, or the bracket, don’t hesitate to ask.
