2025 WATL Rating System

December 4th, 2024

WATL is introducing a new 2025 Rating System designed to enhance competition by dynamically tracking performance and ranking competitors beyond just total points. This innovative system ensures fairness, makes every game matter, and evolves with community feedback in mind to best serve the sport.

What it does:

  • ✅ Sets seeding order for tournaments
  • ✅ Dynamically displays competitor rank vs just total points
  • ✅ Places competitors in divisions based on skill level

What it doesn’t do:

  • ❌ Affect World Championship Qualifications
  • ❌ Update solely based on win or loss
  • ❌ Give unfair advantages to interdivisional competition

This system should be considered a living equation & document. Over time, some calculations may need to be adjusted to best serve the sport and community. Our goal is to constantly improve the system by obtaining direct feedback from the community in addition to our internal evaluations. Summary of How it works:

  • Performance Tracking: High-scoring throws like bullseyes and Killshots improve competitor rating, while drops, zeroes, and faults reduce it.
  • Probability and Fairness: The system predicts how likely a competitor is to win based on their rating compared to their opponent’s. Unexpected wins or losses lead to bigger rating adjustments.
  • Inactivity Decay: Ratings begin to slowly decrease if a player hasn’t competed in a sanctioned league or tournament in over 90 days, encouraging continuous engagement.
  • Division Adjustments: Due to the divisions of the WATL Hatchet discipline having slightly different rulesets, a handicap to the calculation of two players from different divisions is employed.

All of the above are calculated in order to provide a final per-game adjustment to the competitor’s rating.
