An Update From The Commissioner

March 1st, 2024

Dear Axe Throwing Community,

As the commissioner of the World Axe Throwing League (WATL), it is my duty to ensure the integrity and fairness of our organization for the benefit of our affiliates, throwers, and the community at large. As it turns out, recent events compel us to address a concerning issue that threatens the trust and cohesion within our community.

WATL is dedicated to providing opportunities for our affiliates to host events and tournaments, supported by comprehensive documentation to guide them in their endeavors, including clear payment guidelines for tournament winners. We understand the importance of timely and transparent payments to uphold the trust and credibility of our sport.

We must acknowledge instances where some affiliates have failed to adhere to these payment guidelines. While WATL has consistently worked with affiliates and throwers to expedite late payments and resolve disputes in a timely manner, we are deeply troubled by the actions of The Bearded Axe (Saginaw & St. Cairo, Michigan) an affiliate that hosted the Ragnarok tournament in June of 2023.

Despite numerous efforts to address the issues with The Bearded Axe in good faith, including attempts to spread out payments, we regret to inform the community that the situation has not been resolved. WATL has, for several months, attempted to communicate and get an update to resolve the matter, with no response. Despite our continued outreach, The Bearded Axe has ceased communication with WATL, leaving tournament winners unpaid and trust compromised.

In light of these deceptive business practices, we have taken necessary steps to remove The Bearded Axe as an affiliate. We understand the gravity of this situation and its impact on our community’s trust. It is imperative that we address such breaches of trust to uphold the integrity of our sport.

Furthermore, WATL is actively exploring ways to prevent similar occurrences in the future. We ask for your patience as we investigate potential solutions and work towards implementing measures to safeguard against this happening in the future. Additionally, we are looking into standardizing the process for addressing venues that do not pay their tournament winners promptly to ensure swifter resolutions in the future.

As a community, we remain hopeful that this matter can be resolved amicably, and we urge The Bearded Axe to fulfill its obligations to tournament winners. We are committed to preserving the trust and camaraderie that define our community, and we thank you for your continued support and understanding as we navigate this challenging situation together.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we strive to uphold the values and integrity of our sport.

Sincerely,

Sarah Sed
